Better-tasting drinking water only? An under-sink carbon filter at the kitchen tap is the practical starting point. It removes the chlorine taste and smell that makes city water taste like a swimming pool, without touching the rest of your plumbing.
The purest drinking water possible? Reverse osmosis (RO) at the kitchen tap. RO pushes water through a membrane that reduces a far wider range of dissolved contaminants than carbon alone. It's what we'd point you to if your test shows dissolved minerals, metals, or anything the utility report flags.
Chlorine at every tap - showers, skin, hair, laundry? That's whole-home carbon filtration on the main line. An under-sink filter does nothing for your shower; whole-home treats every drop entering the house.
Scale on fixtures, spotty dishes, a water heater that died early? That's hard water, and no filter fixes it, you need a softener. Filtration and softening solve different problems, and many homes eventually want both, often in sequence so the filter protects the softener.

Calgary’s water is treated, tested, and meets drinking-water standards - so for most homes, filtration isn't a health necessity, it's a preference. What the city can't control is how the water tastes and smells at your tap: chlorine from the treatment process, naturally occurring geosmin in Calgary’s source water and sediment in older homes. Many homeowners filter simply because they want water that tastes as clean as it is.
Does Calgary tap water need to be filtered?Does Calgary tap water have fluoride? Can I filter it out? Yes - Calgary reintroduced fluoride on June 30, 2025, at 0.7 mg/L, the level recommended by Health Canada. Some families are comfortable with it; others prefer to reduce it, either way, it's your call. Standard carbon filters don't remove fluoride, so you'd need a reverse osmosis system certified to NSF/ANSI 58 with an explicit fluoride-reduction claim.
